Essential Entry Requirements

Background

Entry Requirements for the Dominican Republic

Punta Cana, August 2026 — The Dominican Republic has updated its entry guidelines to make travel smoother for international visitors, while maintaining essential health and safety standards.

Passport Validity: The general requirement is that passports remain valid for at least six months beyond entry. However, under a temporary measure in place until December 2026, citizens of the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, the European Union, Brazil, Argentina, Chile, Colombia, and Ecuador may enter with passports valid only for the duration of their stay.

Visa Regulations: Most travelers from North America and Europe are exempt from visa requirements for stays of up to 30 days, with the option to extend locally. Citizens from other regions, including parts of Asia and Africa, must apply for a visa in advance through Dominican consulates.

Mandatory eTicket: The paper tourist card has been replaced by the digital eTicket system  https://eticket.migracion.gob.do, required for both entry and exit. Each traveler, including children, must complete the online form before departure. The eTicket consolidates immigration, customs, and health information, and is presented via QR code at the airport.

Health and Safety Precautions: No vaccines are mandatory, but health authorities recommend Hepatitis A, Hepatitis B, and Typhoid, alongside routine immunizations. Travelers should also take precautions against mosquito‑borne illnesses such as dengue, chikungunya, and Zika. Safety guidelines advise using licensed taxis or reputable transport services, avoiding solo travel at night, and securing valuables in hotel safes. Emergency services are available nationwide via 911.

Customs and Currency: Duty‑free allowances include up to 200 cigarettes or 50 cigars and three liters of alcohol. High‑value items must be declared to avoid fines. While U.S. dollars are widely accepted in tourist areas, the Dominican Peso (DOP) is the official currency and often provides better value in local transactions.

Travel Insurance: Although not required, comprehensive travel insurance covering medical emergencies, cancellations, and lost luggage is strongly recommended.

Conclusion: With the introduction of the eTicket system, updated customs allowances, and a temporary passport exception, the Dominican Republic has streamlined entry procedures while reinforcing health and safety measures. Tourists are encouraged to prepare documents in advance to enjoy a hassle‑free start to their Caribbean vacation.
